Spoke tension and tensiometers
The book covers spoke tension and tensiometers but I still get a few questions and it's always a hot topic on any cycle maintenance forum should I buy a tensiometer? and the closely related question are my spokes too tight or not tight enough?
I've had many years experience building wheels without a tensiometer and I also have lots of experience of using tensiometers. In this article I take a close look at the tensiometers from DT-Swiss, Park Tools and FSA and give you the best advice in obtaining a correctly tensioned wheel.
Background reading
Please make sure you have read these sections in the book:
- Rim compressive force, page 12.
- Tensiometers, page 38.
- Complete the final tensioning, pages 60-62, in particular determining the maximum tension and taking care not over tension lightweight road rims.
The following text should be read from top to bottom, it's a chronological account of my dealings with tensiometers.
